While "eligibility" to transport dogs and cats from SA to Australia is technically 7 months, the process can actually take up to 12 months. This is due to the following:

  • Huge backlogs with the authorities for permits with limited space at Post Entry Quarantine (PEQ). PEQ is fully booked until June 2024.
  • Timelines and travel confirmations can only be provided on confirmation of pets’ booking dates, so it is advisable to start the process as soon as possible.
  • The waiting period involves a lot of administration, treatments, and applications, all of which must be perfect. Any errors will be rejected by the authorities and delay the export process – which is hugely stressful and costly.
