Here’s a summary for anyone lucky enough to be owned by a Pug, Persian, or Peke:

  1. BOAS stands for ‘Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome’.

  2. Temperatures, airline conditions, and container sizes are all considered when shipping brachycephalic pets whose transport requirements differ from those of normal-nosed breeds.

  3. Not all pet shippers are qualified, experienced or accredited to work with brachycephalic breeds, and certain airlines will not work with a company that does not hold a BOAS certificate. Qantas, one of the main carriers to Australia and New Zealand, will not work with an agent who is not BOAS accredited.

  4. An IPATA ‘fit-to-fly assessment’ is a 5-page assessment done by a private vet within 72 hours of export. If the assessment is older than 72 hours, pets will not travel, which may result in non-compliance. Only IPATA and BOAS-accredited companies have access to these assessments.

  5. Turkish Airlines also requires an IPATA ‘fit-to-fly’ assessment for brachycephalic pet breeds; without this, they will not book the flight or obtain the “OK2FWD” (Okay to Forward).

The IPATA BOAS accreditation allows us to:

  • Fly all brachycephalic (snub-nosed) pet breeds on all carriers that allow the breeds.
  • Identify brachycephalic pet breeds and know their requirements.
  • Comply with travel crate requirements and sizing.
  • Understand the types of tape required around the edge of the container.
  • Ship brachycephalic breeds on Qantas all year round.
  • IPATA members must follow ethical guidelines for transporting and relocating animals, including the BOAS Assessment Programme Guidelines – click here to go to IPATA BOAS-accredited pet shippers.
