We’ve put together a simple DIY guide based on our own catios and 52 years of pet boarding experience.

Here’s what you’ll need for a basic catio that leads off a room or window in your home:

  • Wooden planks or PVC pipes
  • Wire mesh or chicken wire
  • Screws and nails
  • Hinges and a latch (for a door if you want to be able to close the catio off for any reason)
  • Tools: saw, hammer, drill, measuring tape, and screwdriver
  • Outdoor carpet or mats, and cat-safe plant

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Plan Your Design
Decide on the size and location of your catio. Consider your available space and your cat’s needs, and check out some free plans HERE: 9 Free DIY Catio Plans

  2. Build the Frame
Cut the wooden planks or PVC pipes to the right lengths. Assemble them into a rectangular or square frame using screws or nails. Ensure the structure is sturdy.

  3. Attach the Wire Mesh
Cut the wire mesh to fit the sides of the frame. Secure it with nails or screws, making sure there are no gaps and no sharp edges that could harm your cat.

  4. Add Flooring
Place outdoor carpet or mats inside the catio for comfort and to protect little paws from the wire mesh.

  5. Add Shelves, Plants and Fun Stuff
Include shelves, ramps, and perches inside the catio, where your cat can sunbathe while birdwatching. You can also add cat-safe plants such as catnip (in moderation!), wheatgrass, oatgrass, spider plant, Boston fern, rosemary, thyme, Gerbera daisies, impatiens, and coleus. And a scratch post is always a good idea!

  6. Inspect and Test
Before letting your cat into the catio, check it carefully for safety hazards and escape holes. Make sure that all parts are secure and there are no sharp edges. And then the big moment: introduce your cat to their new outdoor paradise under supervision initially.

Enjoy building your catio! 🐾
